March 25, 2020

Since our March 24, 2020 E-Bulletin, there have been further important announcements of which employers should be aware (a few key details are listed below):
- The Federal government has announced it is merging two previously announced benefits programs for Canadians who are out of, or off work because of COVID-19. Specifically, the new benefit combines the Emergency Care Benefit and Emergency Support Benefit — into the Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB) and will provide up to $2,000 a month for the next four months for people who are off work and without an income as a result of the novel coronavirus.
- The CERB will assist Canadians who have either lost their job or are off sick or taking care of their children because of COVID-19. The government has announced that this emergency benefit should roll out on April 6, 2020 and that Canadians should receive the assistance approximately 10 days after applying.
- The Ontario government has announced that hydro rates for residential and business customers will be billed at the off-peak rate regardless of the time of day. This measure will be in effect for 45 days and will be reassessed at that time.
Given the exceptional and unprecedented situation, we expect further developments in the coming hours and days.
