March 23, 2020
by Israel Foulon LLP

Summary

Since our March 20, 2020 E-Bulletin, there have been further important announcements of which employers should be aware (a few key details are listed below):

  • On March 23, 2020, the Ontario government ordered all non-essential businesses to shut down effective Tuesday, March 24, 2020 at 11:59 p.m. in order to help prevent the spread of COVID- 19. The order will be effective for at least 14 days.
  • The list of what constitutes essential and non-essential services and stores will be released Tuesday. The government has made clear that essential manufacturers, supply chain providers, supermarkets, pharmacies, the LCBO, and takeout restaurants will remain open.
  • The Ontario has also announced that schools will not reopen on April 6, 2020, with further details to follow from the Minister of Education.

Given the exceptional and unprecedented situation, we expect further developments in the coming hours and days.

We will provide a further E-Buletin once the list of non-essential/essential business is provided. In the meantime, employers should immediately begin preparing for a temporary and possibly prolonged shutdown of their operations.
