March 30, 2020
by Israel Foulon Wong LLPSummary
Since our March 27, 2020 E-Bulletin, there have been further important announcements of which employers should be aware (a few key details are listed below):
- The Federal government has revealed that the Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy, which was announced last week, will be available to all businesses (regardless of size or the number of employees) whose revenues have decreased by at least 30%. Specifically, the program applies to non-profits, charities, and businesses of all sizes. Under the program, 75% of employees’ salaries will be covered on the first $58,700 that employees earn – up to $847 per week. The program will be backdated to March 15, 2020.
- The federal government has warned that there will be serious consequences for employers who take advantage of the program, and has asked businesses to pay the remaining 25% of employees’ salaries if they are in a position to do so.
Given the exceptional and unprecedented situation, we expect further developments in the coming hours and days.
